Alpaca

Animal lovers can visit our ponies or alpacas who reside in the pastures throughout the property.  Alpaca’s, similar to llamas, are gentle animals whom have a soft fleece that is shorn each spring.

Those interested in fiber arts may purchase alapac fleece yarn from our alpacas at the Beach Plum Inn front desk.

B.Y.O.B

Menemsha is a dry town, meaning alcohol cannot be purchased at retail outlets or served in restaurants.  Should you wish to enjoy a cocktail during your stay or at the Home Port and Beach Plum Inn Restaurant, we encourage you to bring your own.  Alcohol may be purchased in Oak Bluffs or Edgartown and some retailers provide up-island delivery.  Click here for their information.

OthermarketChilmark and the village of Menemsha have managed to retain a rustic charm and friendly atmosphere enjoyed by its original settlers over 300 years ago.  This is a small community where time slows down, inviting visitors to take a step back from their busy lives and to enjoy the beauty around them.

Early risers catch a glimpse of wild turkeys, deer and rabbits who freely wander this side of the Island. Morning mist reveals a colorful fishing boat headed out to reap the bounty of the sea while overhead, a gliding osprey carries its catch back to its nest.  Green pastures roll toward the sea while grazing sheep and horses seem to not notice the beauty before them.  A babbling brook carries a fallen leaf through a maze of stones in a quiet woodland setting.  There is a quiet, natural beauty here that stirs the soul.

childrenThe sounds of happy children and smell of coconut suntan lotion drifts across the dunes at our picturesque beaches. Bicyclists enjoy the scenic overlooks off a winding road as they pedal towards Aquinnah.  Rustic fishing shacks dot the harbor side, offering the day’s catch.  Shopkeepers chat with tourists as they browse through their colorful merchandise. Ravenous tourists descend on the banks of Menemsha Creek to indulge in a delicious seafood feast from the Home Port Back Door as a kayaker paddles silently across the pond.  This is what a day in Menemsha holds. To plan your day, be sure to talk with our friendly front desk staff who are more than happy to assist you.
